The Thirteenth – an Icelandic adventure of Trolls, Elves and 13 Yule Lads
An amazing documentary about the annual Thirteenth celebration in Vestmannaeyjar in Iceland. The Thirteenth has been celebrated since 1948. The celebration is a giant outdoor theatre performance, thanks to more than 200 volunteers that have taken part in it from one generation to another.
The volunteers assist The 13 Icelandic Yule Lads, their parents, Grýla and Leppalúði, Trolls, Elves and other mythical creatures. The Thirteenth has roots in an old tradition in the Nordic and many European countries, known as mumming, where people disguise themselves in the midwinter. The documentary was filmed at The Thirteenth over the course of five years, 2015-2019.
